Christmas day has come and gone
The decorations now look forlorn
Can you believe Easter, now advertised?
Are we even remotely surprised?
Our Religious and secular stories
Are now framed by retail glories
Today you are purchasing a festive wreath
Tomorrow hidden Easter eggs give grief
How easily we allow our special days
To be defined in our consumer ways
The sum of our spending is news?!
And they provide our societal cues?!
I think that it is sad to have to say
That this has become the normal way
In which we choose how to celebrate
The basis on which our joy can predicate
Can we return to celebrate the reason
Originally behind this holiday season
Save our money for our ongoing survival
Give better reasons than retail, a revival
