I decided to combine the Daily Post exercise with the battle I had with the Blogging 101 exercise for today. The exercise was to: Today’s assignment: create and publish your About page, and adapt it for a widget on your home page. The Daily Post prompt was: Fill in the blank: “Life is too short to _____.” Now, write a post telling us how you’ve come to that conclusion.
To begin this exercise I read Blogging About 101, 201 and the information about widgets at least three times. I felt like I was stuck in a maze where I kept following the information trail but did not end up at any effective destination. Instead, I just kept accessing more information that was making less and less sense to me. I got so frustrated with my inability to understand what was probably sensible and simple to most people that when I saw the daily post it clicked “life is too short to get this angry with my inability to complete a blog activity“.
I worked out where the widgets were and how to add them. Well that is accept from the part where I needed to adapt the About page to a widget. That has not happened and seems unlikely to do so. I almost got it and then I couldn’t get the picture right the blue symbol was just annoying, even when I set my photo over ad over again. And then I lost what I was working on and never really found it again.
My next plan was to wander the themes to see if there was one that added widgets where I wanted them. I like the side bar and I like comments at the bottom of the associated post. I have almost got this where I want it. The colours are not too offensive or distracting from the text and the images look good. I spent a lot of time working on finding a more “perfect” theme – which was in reality, probably a form of procrastination to avoid attempting a further run at the exercise.
So the conclusion to the “life is too short …” is that I am going to take a break from the fight with my About page and its widget and just keep plodding at the technical side until I get it. What I have on my About page I actually like – I am just not sure it is an About page. All suggestions ad advice are welcome!!!
